Talking about money can be hard at first for many people.

It makes them feel uncomfortable, awkward and anxious.

Lots of times it means facing reality and figuring out what’s realistic when it comes to buying a home or retiring or what they’re able to afford. Other times it means discussing things like what would happen if they died or their kids got sick.

Most of us have gotten really good at not talking about these things.

And even worse, lots of people have bad experiences the first time they do. They eventually work up the courage to go to the bank and get scolded and shamed, told how they’re not doing things right and should know better.

And then that just leads to avoiding the conversation for even longer.

But here’s some good news: it doesn’t have to be like that.

Talking about money can in fact be easy and comfortable, even fun.

It’s better to think about talking about money like a skill or a muscle. The more you do it, the easier it becomes, the more you realize that it’s not so scary after all.

And it also helps huge when you’re talking to the right person. Someone who’s understanding, interested in what you actually want to do, and who wants to help you figure things out.

Not to toot my own horn, but that person is me. Talk to me.

Or your partner. Or a parent or close friend. Someone you trust.

Just start talking. Start flexing that muscle.

Because once you get the conversation started, you’re already headed in the right direction.
